GameBoy Music was written in 1997 as an arrangement of the last movement of the Five Movements for Saxophone Quartet by Australian composer Matthew Hindson.

The piece was originally described by the saxophonist James Nightingale as: “the sort of music a GameBoy might play after the batteries have gotten wet.” This indeed summarises the character of the work.

The first performance of this version was given by Sarah Watts (clarinet) and Anita d’Attellis (piano) at the finals fo the Performing Australia competition, Australia House, London, on 9 May 2001.
