How Can We Help?
How long do clarinet reeds last?
Clarinet reeds do not last forever. Because they are made from natural cane, they gradually wear out with use and need to be replaced regularly.
For most students, a clarinet reed typically lasts about 2–3 weeks of regular playing. Players who practise more frequently may need to replace reeds sooner.
Many clarinetists rotate between several reeds so they do not wear out as quickly.
Signs a clarinet reed is wearing out
- The reed feels harder to play than usual.
- The tone becomes dull or unfocused.
- Notes squeak more often.
- The reed looks chipped, warped, or uneven.
- The tip of the reed appears frayed.
Why reeds wear out
- Natural cane fibres break down
Clarinet reeds are made from cane. Over time the fibres weaken and the reed loses flexibility.
- Moisture and drying cycles
Each time a reed is played it absorbs moisture and then dries again. These cycles gradually weaken the material.
- Pressure from the mouthpiece and ligature
The reed is pressed against the mouthpiece during playing, which slowly changes its shape.
- Reeds are fragile
Reeds are also very delicate. With younger or beginner players in particular, it’s common to see reeds damaged accidentally when assembling the instrument. The tip can easily chip if it catches on the ligature, clothing, or even the edge of the mouthpiece. This is very normal when students are learning, but it does mean reeds may need replacing more often.
What many players don’t realise
A worn reed can make the clarinet much harder to play, even if the instrument itself is in good condition.
If your reeds are not lasting very long, it may also be worth trying a different brand or strength. You can browse our range of clarinet reeds on this page.
If a fresh reed does not improve the sound or response, the clarinet itself may need attention.
