How Can We Help?
Why does my clarinet squeak?
A squeaking clarinet is one of the most common problems students experience. While technique can sometimes be a factor, frequent squeaking is often caused by small mechanical issues with the instrument.
Even minor leaks or adjustments can make a clarinet much harder to control.
Common causes of clarinet squeaks
- Leaking pads
Pads that are worn, compressed, or not sealing properly can allow air to escape, causing unstable notes and squeaks.
- Misaligned keys
If keys are slightly bent or out of regulation, they may not close fully when pressed.
- Loose corks or felts
Worn corks and felts can affect how the keys close, creating tiny leaks that lead to squeaking. If keys are slightly bent or out of regulation, they may not close fully when pressed.
- Damaged or poorly fitting reeds
A chipped or warped reed can also cause squeaks, especially on beginner instruments.
